The Rasta Peth Education Society was founded on August 29, 1927, to address the urgent need for education in the eastern part of Pune city, which at the time was economically and educationally backward.
The founders of the society included Sardar S. C. Mudaliyar, Reverend S. D. Savarkar, Sardar N. K. Dastoor, M. A. Raste, Khanbahaddur M. Salahuddin, and S. N. Karnataki. It was established solely for the purpose of educating Slum Children—the urban underprivileged.
This Marathi-language school was established with the sole purpose of giving slum children access to free education. The school now offers Marathi Medium Primary School, English Medium Pre-Primary School, English Medium Primary School, Night School, Junior College, and Day School.
With just 150 students, this school was started to educate the underprivileged classes. After Dattatraya Pilaji Atre, aka Abasaheb Atre, assumed leadership of the school in 1933, it began to grow. Dr. Prabha Atre's father established night English classes in 1936 to aid the working class in gaining exposure and fundamental knowledge.
There are currently 896+ students enrolled in this school, and the majority of them are from the nearby slum areas, families from the working class and children who work during the day. From kindergarten through upper secondary, students are given free education in this location. The school offers Day High classes, Junior Classes, and Night High Classes so that those who would not be able to attend school during the day can still receive an education.
